Sunday, September 25, 2016: “Are Unitarian-Universalists Soft on Evil?”

Presenter: Karen Fothergill

This weeks message will be based on a talk by the Rev Dr Carolyn Sheets Owen-Towle. We will examine the following idea: How do we reconcile our beliefs in the inherent worth and dignity of every being with the notion of evil?

“Both the capacity for brutality and the capacity for love exist in all of our hearts. A belief in our innocence is not an option. We must find place that can know the reality of both.” — Rev. Dr. William Sinkford

Rev. Sheets Owen-Towle is minister emeritus of First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, which she served with her husband, the Rev. Tom Owen-Towle, from 1978 to 2002. She was a candidate for the UUA presidency in 1993. A published author and popular speaker, she is also the daughter of renowned water colorist Millard Sheets. Carolyn has always been immersed in the world of art and continues to be actively involved with many art organizations.

Unitarian Universalism honors the differing paths we each travel. Our congregations are places where we celebrate, support, and challenge one another as we continue on these journeys. Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and acceptance of one another.UA GNBathrm
