Thanksgiving Beyond the Turkey — November 20, 2022

Jon Thompson and Perri Gardner will lead a discussion about Thanksgiving.

Please join our Magic Valley Unitarian Universalist community for a facilitated conversation on the topics of tradition, community, and gratitude. Congregant Perri Gardner will lead a discussion that celebrates and critically explores the Thanksgiving holiday. Please come prepared to engage in conversation and fun activities. The themes of this service will also be relevant to two other excellent events happening in our community this Sunday, November 20th.

Please consider joining us in community at our Transgender Day of Remembrance at 3 PM (in our Fellowship at 160 9th Ave E.). Additionally, our friends at the United Methodist Church will be hosting a Thanksgiving Feast at 12:30 PM in their basement at 360 Shoshone St.

This service will not be on Zoom.

Traditions of Terror — Oct. 30, 2022

Cultures of violence in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and “Weird Al Yankovich’s “Weasel Stomping Day.”

MVUUF member Jon Thompson discusses the blind adherence to tradition in the two works and the importance of using self-reflection to break free from harmful practices.

October 23rd – Rev. Jenny Peek, A Place for Fear

Fear is not a virtue, however understandable it may be to feel fear sometimes. Yet if we spend all our time at odds with fear as a despicable state to be avoided, we miss some clear chances to learn. How are our fears played against us, keeping us at odds with our neighbors? How are fears healthy and protective?

June 27 Topic: Improv as Cross-Training for Life

Ever hear the saying, “People plan; God laughs”?  We do plan, don’t we though. The unexpected causes us to improvise on the spot–from barbecues being rained out to the birthday child having a fever the day before their party. We modify, postpone, or even scrap our plans all the time. This is ‘Improv as Life’.

Join us Sunday at our physical location 160 9th Avenue East in Twin Falls or online as our visiting minister Reverend Jenny from Pocatello, Idaho shares her reflection on some of improvisation’s principles that serve well as cross-training for our lives. Unitarian Universalism honors the differing paths we each travel. Our congregations are places where we celebrate, support, and challenge one another as we continue on our spiritual journeys.

June 20: A Playful Sunday

Play is the worship theme for the month of June for Unitarian Universalists. Author Diane Ackerman writes “In rare moments of deep play, we can lay aside our sense of self, shed time’s continuum, ignore pain, and sit quietly in the absolute present, watching the world’s ordinary miracles. No mind or heart hobbles. No analyzing or explaining. No questing for logic. No promises. No goals. No relationships. No worry. One is completely open to whatever drama may unfold.”

Join us this Sunday at our physical location 160 9th Avenue East in Twin Falls or online for a service of “play.” Please bring one of your favorite jokes to share. To join online email MVUUF83301@yahoo.com for the Zoom link.

May 30 Flower Ceremony Service

Each year, Unitarian Universalist Churches across the country celebrate the coming of summer with a flower ceremony. Originally created in 1923 by Unitarian minister Norbert Capek of Prague, Czechoslovakia, the Flower Ceremony was introduced to the United States by Rev. Maya Capek, Norbert’s widow. Also sometimes referred to as Flower Communion or Flower Festival, it is an annual ritual that celebrates beauty, human uniqueness, diversity, and community. For this ceremony, everyone is asked to bring a flower if they can.

Each person places a flower in a large vase. The congregation blesses the flowers, and they’re redistributed. Each person takes home a different flower than the one they brought. If possible, please bring a flower or flowers that can be combined with all of the others in a large vase during the service.

The service will be in person starting at 10:30 am at the Magic Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, located at 160 9th Ave. East, Twin Falls, Idaho

MVUUF is now meeting in person beginning May 23rd.

Idaho is now in Stage 4 of our pandemic recovery and as the country slowly recovers from the recent pandemic, we, the leadership team at the Magic Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, are pleased to announce that we will soon be meeting in person regularly. This exciting news comes as we close out the 2020-2021 fiscal year and prepare for the 2021-2022 year where we hope to reestablish the sense of community we were so recently forced to give up.

Please join us at our regular meeting place, 160 9th Avenue East in Twin Falls. Our service begins at 10:30 AM.
