Sunday, November 27, 2016: “The Power of Words”

Presented by: Chad Minteer

Beyond the power to hurt or to heal, to unite or divide, words have the power to create. It is with words that we describe and represent the reality we inhabit. These representations become reality, our shared dream, the contours of which are often taken for granted and left unarticulated and unexamined.

What do we want to create? What world do we want to live in? Fears and resentments shrink our world, convince us we are separate and divided, and ultimately cause us to act in ways that ensure that we are.

On the other hand, hope, commitment, resilience, determination, acceptance, tolerance, love and a host of other attitudes and spiritual practices and ways of being in the world expand us, remind us how we are connected to one another, and ultimately cause us to act in ways that strengthen the bonds that hold us together.

In the midst of post-election anxiety and looking into an always uncertain future, join us as we participate in Beloved Community and seek our best and highest selves.

Unitarian Universalism honors the differing paths we each travel. Our congregations are places where we celebrate, support, and challenge one another as we continue on these journeys. Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and acceptance of one another.

Please join us Sunday at the Vendor Blender and Event Center, 588 Addison Avenue West in Twin Falls at 10:30 AM. The Vendor Blender is located near the old hospital near the intersection of Martin St. and Addison Avenue West. Newcomers of all religious paths or none at all are always welcome. Sunday, November 20, 2016: “The Blessings of Boundaries”

Presented by: Julie Merrick

Boundaries are the personal limits we create to maintain balance and protect ourselves from interactions which might undermine our integrity and lead to a loss of self respect.

The blessings of boundaries are enormous and allow us to live from a place of choice rather than obligation. When we learn to meet our needs for love and acceptance internally, we release our fears of not being loved by others and we become able to express who we are and what we want from life in a firm, loving and respectful manner.

Reminder:
This is a brief message to remind everyone that we will be having a harvest potluck lunch following our service this Sunday. Please remember to bring a food item to share. If you are unable, that’s okay your presence is all we need.

Sunday, November 13, 2016: “Just Do The Right Thing”

Presented by: Don Morishita

In our lifetimes, we are faced with making the ‘right decision’ on seemingly small issues to life changing issues. The ‘right decision’ may be based on where we stand in our lives. From something as small as placing the shopping cart we just used into the cart rack so that it isn’t left in a parking spot, to something bigger such as helping someone in need or taking advantage of someone in a business deal.

For most of us, making a decision to do the right thing by not cheating someone out of their money is a no-brainer. For most of us, we just wouldn’t do it. But is there some level that it is not really that bad to cheat someone. What about the cashier who mistakenly undercharges you for something you just bought? Or, what about seeing someone drop something of value and they don’t realize it. Would you always run to catch that person? What is it that drives us to make the ‘right decision’? Is it because we just feel better about ourselves by doing the right thing or is there a feeling, belief or fear that you’re being watched? Just doing the right thing can sometimes be easier said than done.

Sunday, November 6, 2016: “It’s Not the Changes, It’s the Transitions”

Presented by: Rev. Elizabeth Greene

Please Note: a congregational meeting and potluck meal will follow this service.

leaf-changing-colorAs we all know, change is just one of those constants of life: family life changes, work or school changes, deaths and births and marriages, beginnings and ends of relationships, changes in our own life journeys.

These are often challenging, and we do go through them a lot better when we approach them from spiritual strength and centeredness.

Referring back to William Bridges’ work on change and transition, Rev. Greene will reflect on how the process of transition—the actual way we go through change—is worth our attention.
