“Prayer” is a very common religious subject and practice, but can sometimes be interpreted in narrow ways that do not do justice to our spiritual lives.

Do we always have to pray TO something or someone? Does prayer usually have a creed or set of beliefs behind it? If so, is that necessary? Rev. Greene will reflect on ways to broaden our idea of prayer, perhaps expanding it into something that can enlarge and enrich anyone, regardless of spiritual beliefs and values.

This service will include a blessing for children. Parents will share the meaning or background of their child’s (children’s) name(s) and the congregation will say words of support as a congregational village. Each child will receive a rose.

This weeks message will be based on a talk by the Rev Dr Carolyn Sheets Owen-Towle. We will examine the following idea: How do we reconcile our beliefs in the inherent worth and dignity of every being with the notion of evil?

Rev. Sheets Owen-Towle is minister emeritus of First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego, which she served with her husband, the Rev. Tom Owen-Towle, from 1978 to 2002. She was a candidate for the UUA presidency in 1993. A published author and popular speaker, she is also the daughter of renowned water colorist Millard Sheets. Carolyn has always been immersed in the world of art and continues to be actively involved with many art organizations.

“Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without the words and never stops at all.” This famous quote by Emily Dickinson, touches upon the beauty and wonder of this feeling we call hope; this is a state of mind that shines a light in our dark moments and carries us over rough waters.

Hope can dissolve fear and empower us to take another step on our journey, no matter how challenging that step might be. Hope whispers that there is love and light and possibility present in this moment and calls our attention there.

Speaking of community, the poet Rumi writes that we are all wanderers and worshipers and lovers of leaving. That last word, “leaving” jars us when we think of the groups to which we belong: our churches and temples and places of worship. But, if he is right that we sometimes seem to love leaving, how do we deal with this, in our communities? How does faith and fellowship keep human beings together joyfully, in the face of all that happens in the world?
