Unitarian Universalism believes that there are many paths to the holy, and that it is right to accept people from all religious and philosophical views, as long as those views do not harm others. With such an embracing outlook, what brings a faith together? Elizabeth will reflect on how the value of reverence can bring all of us together in compassion, equity and justice. Reverence is a high attitude that, when we embrace it, allows us to accept others, even though their path might not be fulfilling to us.

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and acceptance of one another.

Part of a free and responsible search for truth may be outgrowing beliefs that are limiting. But things are not always as they seem, and part of personal growth is coming to a new understanding of our own limited perspectives. As T.S. Eliot said, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
Many of us who consider ourselves Unitarian Universalists or even simply seekers can tell stories of what we used to believe, religions we used to be part of, and faith traditions that we left behind. But as we discover when we muster the courage to go exploring, even what we have left behind may be more diverse than we imagined. Join us in exploring some examples of “Lost Christianities” and what learning about them meant to us.

In honor of Ganesh Chaturthi, a celebration of the Hindu god Ganesha, our guest, Elton Hall a member of the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will explore how he got connected to Ganesha, the Lord of Success (the Hindu Elephant Diety), and what it may mean for a rationalist who is skeptical of gods. This personal story will consider implications for all of us.

Each fall, religiously-practicing Jews observe High Holy Days, beginning with Rosh Hashanah and ending ten days later with Yom Kippur. During that time, the disciplines of self-examination, atonement and forgiveness are practiced.
What can all of us learn from this practice of commitment to self-honest, integrity and the right relationship?

Sunday, September 6, 2015: “Water Communion”

Like water flowing to the sea, we have returned from the mountains, rivers and quiet places where we spent some of our days this past year then once again returned to our beloved community.

As we come together for our first service of the “new” church year we will celebrate both new beginnings and reminisce together.

Members and guests are invited to bring water from their summer adventures, be they from travels far or near (even from your home water supply).

We will be sharing our stories with each other as we participate in our uniquely Unitarian Universalist ritual of water communion, so please be prepared to offer a sentence or two, not only where the water is from but perhaps more importantly, what meaning it holds for you.
