Reclaiming the Heart of Our Humanity was the theme of the historical 2015 Parliament of The World’s Religions held in the United States for the first time in over twenty years this past October.

Salt Lake City was the host city of this largest global interfaith congregation composed of a gathering of people from over 80 different countries and 50 different religions.

The Unitarian Universalist Association was proudly represented among the many sponsors of this momentous and celebratory occasion.

The mission of the Parliament is to “cultivate harmony among the world’s religious and spiritual communities and foster their engagement with the world and its guiding institutions in order to achieve a just, peaceful and sustainable world.”

In the words of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama: “I believe the interfaith movement can contribute in helping to save the world. But not just through the nice words of dialogue but with our actions. It is the responsibility of human beings to fix the problems which we create: of climate change, of the widening income gap, of hate and war. God will not do this for us; we must take responsibility for our actions.”

Part of the joys – or headaches! – of the season are the familiar songs that recall wintertime, celebrations with family and friends, charity, compassion – or too much time at the mall!

Whether you are religious or not, familiar Christmas carols bring to mind the best of the season and often put people in a festive mood. Of course, some are overplayed (do we really need another version of Rudolph?) and some may be challenging to those whose beliefs have changed over the years.

This week at the Magic Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship we will have a “Singing Sunday” – with only a brief few words to introduce some of the carols, our service will consist of singing. Some are traditional, some secular, some very Unitarian-Universalist. Hopefully all bring some warmth to your heart. Please join us and lend us your voices.

What is at the heart of the “War on Christmas” controversy? Why can something as simple as a symbolic coffee cup rouse people to anger and self-righteousness?

At its best, what is the true spirit of our mid-winter holidays? Rev. Greene will reflect on what it might mean when the angels bring good news, or when the Hanukkah candles miraculously burn for eight days, or when the Yule fire buns bright. Where is the joy to be found, in this dark time of the year?
