The Ultimate Question: The Meaning of Life

Sunday, we will watch a video talk by Ajahn Brahmali who was born in Norway in 1964. He first became interested in Buddhism and meditation in his early 20s after a visit to Japan. Having completed degrees in engineering and finance, he began his monastic training as an anagarika (Pali: anāgārika/ā; lit., “homeless one”), a person who has given up most or all of his worldly possessions and responsibilities to commit full-time to Buddhist practice. It is a midway status between monk and layperson where one takes on the Eight Precepts.

Ajahn Brahmāli teaches the monastic rules and gives Pali (the ancient language of the Buddha) classes to the monks and anagarikas at Bodhinyana Monastery.

Ajahn Brahmāli’s clear and thoughtful talks make the teachings of the Buddha accessible to all.

He teaches regularly in Singapore.

The waiting place is useless because it spoils the present moment. It holds our attention on lack and so feeds a constant dissatisfaction with what is. This is not a happy anticipation of what is coming, but a mindset that our life is never enough. But how does one stop believing that the next moment will be more fulfilling than this one? How do we exit the waiting place? Please join us for a discussion that addresses these questions and offers ideas for shifting our perceptions.

Rev. Elizabeth Greene takes her sermon title from a classic Unitarian Universalist hymn, “Where Is Our Holy Church?” This is a particularly good question for a faith tradition that values deeds over creeds, and love over law, a tradition that expects each soul to find her or his own path to Mystery. Rev. Greene will explore the values that make Unitarian Universalism a spiritual path for our time: nurturing the soul and helping heal the world.
