We modify, postpone, or even scrap our plans all the time. This is ‘Improv as Life’.

Play is the worship theme for the month of June for Unitarian Universalists. Author Diane Ackerman writes “In rare moments of deep play, we can lay aside our sense of self, shed time’s continuum, ignore pain, and sit quietly in the absolute present, watching the world’s ordinary miracles. No mind or heart hobbles. No analyzing or explaining. No questing for logic. No promises. No goals. No relationships. No worry. One is completely open to whatever drama may unfold.”

Over 30 state legislatures have passed or are considering bills that would ban the teaching of Critical Race Theory in our public schools. What is Critical Race Theory anyway? And why are people so threatened by it?
Each year, Unitarian Universalist Churches across the country celebrate the coming of summer with a flower ceremony. Originally created in 1923 by Unitarian minister Norbert Capek of Prague, Czechoslovakia, the Flower Ceremony was introduced to the United States by Rev. Maya Capek, Norbert’s widow. Also sometimes referred to as Flower Communion or Flower Festival, it is an annual ritual that celebrates beauty, human uniqueness, diversity, and community. For this ceremony, everyone is asked to bring a flower if they can.
Each person places a flower in a large vase. The congregation blesses the flowers, and they’re redistributed. Each person takes home a different flower than the one they brought. If possible, please bring a flower or flowers that can be combined with all of the others in a large vase during the service.

Idaho is now in Stage 4 of our pandemic recovery and as the country slowly recovers from the recent pandemic, we, the leadership team at the Magic Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, are pleased to announce that we will soon be meeting in person regularly. This exciting news comes as we close out the 2020-2021 fiscal year and prepare for the 2021-2022 year where we hope to reestablish the sense of community we were so recently forced to give up.

The Magic Valley UU Fellowship has been invited to join First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake and the South Valley UU Society for a post-election drop-in gathering and vespers service via Zoom on Wednesday evening, November 4, from 6 to 9 pm. All of our UU friends across Utah and southern Idaho are invited to attend. We will have a drop-in style open house discussion moderated by the ministers – come whenever you like, stay as long as you like, be comforted by the presence of other UUs as we process what is sure to be an uncertain result of the election and an uncertain future for our country.
The meeting runs from between 6 to 9 pm (Mountain Time). During that time there will be a 30 minute worship service starting at 7:30pm MT

Heide Cottam is a long-time Unitarian Universalist and member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ogden. She currently serves as Communications & Leadership Facilitator and Chair of their Worship Team. Heide is dedicated to this shared faith and has been excited to see the possibilities of growing relationships between congregations during this time of unrest and physical distance. Heide is also passionate about her long list of labels: mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, Unitarian Universalist, activist, poet, seeker, Executive Assistant, and witness.
