Sunday, January 3, 2016: “Happiness”

Host: Ken Whiting

Presenter: Michael Johnson

Surely we all said happy New Year these last few days. But then what? We tend to go on in the New Year like we did in the last year. And each year we do that we seek happiness.

But how do we find happiness. Without some kind of map it’s just accidental. Also it seems, that we unknowingly sabotage our efforts toward happiness.

So, let’s explore a map that we can follow in the coming year to help us toward that “Happy New Year.”
As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Please join us Sunday at the Vendor Blender and Event Center, 588 Addison Avenue West in Twin Falls at 10:30 AM. Sunday, December 27, 2015: “Reclaiming the Heart of Our Humanity”

Host: Karen Fothergill

Presenter: Mary McGinnis

Reclaiming the Heart of Our Humanity was the theme of the historical 2015 Parliament of The World’s Religions held in the United States for the first time in over twenty years this past October.

Salt Lake City was the host city of this largest global interfaith congregation composed of a gathering of people from over 80 different countries and 50 different religions.

The Unitarian Universalist Association was proudly represented among the many sponsors of this momentous and celebratory occasion.

The mission of the Parliament is to “cultivate harmony among the world’s religious and spiritual communities and foster their engagement with the world and its guiding institutions in order to achieve a just, peaceful and sustainable world.”

In the words of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama: “I believe the interfaith movement can contribute in helping to save the world. But not just through the nice words of dialogue but with our actions. It is the responsibility of human beings to fix the problems which we create: of climate change, of the widening income gap, of hate and war. God will not do this for us; we must take responsibility for our actions.”

Please join us as a member of our congregation relays a brief history of the Parliament of The World’s Religions along with how her own religious and spiritual path intersected with this experience.

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Sunday, December 20, 2015: “Joys or Headaches of the Season”

Host/Presenter: Chad Minteer

Part of the joys – or headaches! – of the season are the familiar songs that recall wintertime, celebrations with family and friends, charity, compassion – or too much time at the mall!

Whether you are religious or not, familiar Christmas carols bring to mind the best of the season and often put people in a festive mood. Of course, some are overplayed (do we really need another version of Rudolph?) and some may be challenging to those whose beliefs have changed over the years.

This week at the Magic Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship we will have a “Singing Sunday” – with only a brief few words to introduce some of the carols, our service will consist of singing. Some are traditional, some secular, some very Unitarian-Universalist. Hopefully all bring some warmth to your heart. Please join us and lend us your voices.

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Sunday, December 13, 2015: “The Reasons for the Season”

Host/Presenter: Don Morishita

In the US and many other countries, Christmas is still recognized as the most important holiday in the month of December. Some ardent defenders of Christmas believe this is the only ‘reason for the season’. However, as one who enjoys a celebration, it is important to recognize there are holidays representing many faiths and beliefs that are also worthy of celebrating during December.

Join us for a commemorative service recognizing the many events in December that give us many reasons for the season.

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Sunday, December 6, 2015: “The Spirit of the Season: Love Will Guide Us”

Host: Ray Cross

Presenter: Rev. Elizabeth Greene

What is at the heart of the “War on Christmas” controversy? Why can something as simple as a symbolic coffee cup rouse people to anger and self-righteousness?

At its best, what is the true spirit of our mid-winter holidays? Rev. Greene will reflect on what it might mean when the angels bring good news, or when the Hanukkah candles miraculously burn for eight days, or when the Yule fire buns bright. Where is the joy to be found, in this dark time of the year?

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and acceptance of one another.

Sunday, November 29, 2015: “What are Your Intentions?”

Host: Ken Whiting
Presenter: Julie Merrick
An intention can be defined as a purpose or attitude toward the effect of one’s actions or conduct; an aim which guides. When we consider what it is we most want and then set intentions that align with our desires, outcomes shift and what we experience changes. What do we intend for our Fellowship? Our relationships? The work that we do? The impact that we have on this world? Every aspect of our life bares consideration. What is it we most want and do our intentions support the unfolding of those desires?
As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and acceptance of one another.

Sunday, November 22, 2015: “Spirituality, Innovation, Diversity and Radical Inclusion”

Host: Don Morishita

Guest Speaker: Bill Reid, Boise Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship

Bill Reid, from the Boise Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, will present our service this Sunday on spirituality, innovation, diversity and radical inclusion. He will be asking the following possible questions, “Who is spiritual and who is not?” “Who decides?” “If Unitarian-Universalists really welcomed everyone, what would happen?” “Is there such a thing as too much diversity?” “Are we as inclusive and welcoming as we think we are?” Please join us for the beginning of a conversation.

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Sunday, November 15, 2015: “Mind-Bending Experiences”

Host: Kacee O’Conner

Presenter: Richard Storck

Our focus Sunday will be on mind-bending experiences that are of the extraordinary kind that can happen to anyone. Mind-bending experiences can and do affect us deeply. These experiences not only affect us in ways we recognize and understand, but also in ways we don’t understand.

Once a “mind-bending experience” happens to us, we no longer think the same way we did before this experience occurred. Our mind has been bent, (changed) and we cannot go back to the way we thought before that experience. These “experiences” can be life changing.
