March 11, 2018: “Increasing Empathy”

It is a great gift of human beings to be able to intuitively feel that we are all connected. For some, this is more natural and for others it seems almost to be missing. Empathy is one of the most vital skills for emotional intelligence.

Empathy doesn’t ask us to take responsibility for someone else’s feelings. It is the ability to be truly present with someone. It is the ability to hold a safe space for others to experience their own emotions. Empathy is an important skill of emotional intelligence and is cultivated over a lifetime of effort.

Given the current political climate, it is important for us to work to cultivate empathy for others and help others learn to cultivate this skill also.

Unitarian Universalism honors the differing paths we each travel. Our congregations are places where we celebrate, support, and challenge one another as we continue on our spiritual journeys.

This is a final reminder that there will be no morning service this Sunday, March 4.  We are instead having an afternoon service and celebration party at the 360’s Event Center in Twin Falls (directions below).

  • Take a slight right onto Shoshone St.

  • Once you cross Main Street, start looking for 4th Ave. S.
  • Turn Left onto 4th Ave. S. (Note, #’d streets count down until you reach Main. Then they count up again after Main.)

Sunday, February 25: “Spiritual Quilts”

Much like a beloved hand-made quilt, spiritual practices can summon comfort, beauty and love into our lives.

We might wrap ourselves in prayer, meditation and mindfulness or be comforted with long walks as we contemplate the beauty of nature. We could keep journals of gratitude and reflection, set aside time for study and inspiration, and create habits of kindness and compassion.

We may wish to embrace a Sabbath time of rest and renewal and attend gatherings, such as church services, where we may connect with others. We all have need of support in our lives and choosing to cultivate practices of the spirit which resonate with our personal search for truth and meaning, will bless our lives.

Feb. 18: “The Gutsy Girl: Escapades for Your Life of Epic Adventure”

Writer Caroline Paul, one of the first women on San Francisco’s firefighting force and an experimental plane pilot, believes that not much has changed in the century since the Victorian era — “…. that beneath the surface progress, our culture still nurses girls on “the insidious language of fear” and boys on “that of bravery and resilience.” ****

February 11: “Is Anything Meant to Be?”

Many of us feel comfort at the thought that some divine force or God is looking after us and guiding our lives. We may feel protected and led to think that things that happen to us were [or are] “Meant To Be”.  Our service this Sunday will explore this question, and the contemplation which may result.

February 4: Developing Perseverance

Individuals who practice perseverance have an intense commitment to what they are doing and seem to be able to sustain this steadfastness even in the face of obstacles, losses and setbacks.

This ancient virtue of perseverance can be part of a fuller and richer life. This talk will explore the concept of perseverance and how spirituality may play a role, roadblocks to perseverance, and how to cultivate perseverance in your life.

The Djembe West African drumming group will provide drumming during offertory.

January 28: “The Gift of Good Questions”

As we think this month about “Intention” starting out a new year and well on our way to new spring beginnings, we’re invited to think carefully about our connections with other people.

When was the last time someone asked you an open honest question? A question that invited you to reflect more deeply on your own life asked by a person who did not want to advise you or “fix” you but “hear you into speech”?

For most of us, this is rare. If we pay attention to our own interactions, we may find ourselves not really connecting with the shared humanity in others but instead listening with an ear to offer advice or fix or help or talk about ourselves.

The difference really is our intention and the gift we have to give is not knowledge of how to fix someone else’s problems but the gift of listening and asking good questions that remind people of their own often unsuspected inner resources.

We do not have to be skilled professionals for this to work well – it’s all about our orientation towards each other and our shared humanity.

Join us as we consider how we all may bear this gift.

January 7: A Reason for Being: Ikigai

Ikigai is the Japanese concept for “a reason for being” or purpose in living. Living one’s Ikigai brings meaning to life. In Japanese culture, it is considered one of the keys to happiness and longevity.Ikigai

Ikigai stems from the intersection of “what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.”

This talk will explore this concept further, integrate it with spirituality, invite you to contemplate your own Ikigai, and explore possible “reasons for being” for our fellowship.

Please join our Candlelight Christmas Eve Service Saturday, December 24th beginning at 7:00 PM at the Vendor Blender. candlesRefreshments will be provided and a collection will be taken for Heifer International. Please Note: there will not be a service on Sunday morning, Christmas Eve Day. Worship services will resume on Sunday, December 31st.
