Sunday, October 4, 2015: “Reverence and Acceptance,” Rev. Elizabeth Greene”

Host: Kacee O’Conner
Presenter: Rev. Elizabeth Greene

Unitarian Universalism believes that there are many paths to the holy, and that it is right to accept people from all religious and philosophical views, as long as those views do not harm others. With such an embracing outlook, what brings a faith together? Elizabeth will reflect on how the value of reverence can bring all of us together in compassion, equity and justice. Reverence is a high attitude that, when we embrace it, allows us to accept others, even though their path might not be fulfilling to us.

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and acceptance of one another.

Please join us Sunday at the Vendor Blender and Event Center, 588 Addison Avenue West in Twin Falls at 10:30 AM. The Vendor Blender is located near the old hospital near the intersection of Martin St. and Addison Avenue West. Newcomers of all religious paths or none at all are always welcome. Sunday, September 27, 2015: “The Big Tent”

Host/Presenter: Chad Minteer
Part of a free and responsible search for truth may be outgrowing beliefs that are limiting. But things are not always as they seem, and part of personal growth is coming to a new understanding of our own limited perspectives. As T.S. Eliot said, “We shall not cease from exploration, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time.”
Many of us who consider ourselves Unitarian Universalists or even simply seekers can tell stories of what we used to believe, religions we used to be part of, and faith traditions that we left behind. But as we discover when we muster the courage to go exploring, even what we have left behind may be more diverse than we imagined. Join us in exploring some examples of “Lost Christianities” and what learning about them meant to us.

Host: Ken Whiting

Presenter: Elton Hall
(Guest Speaker from Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship)

In honor of Ganesh Chaturthi, a celebration of the Hindu god Ganesha, our guest, Elton Hall a member of the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will explore how he got connected to Ganesha, the Lord of Success (the Hindu Elephant Diety), and what it may mean for a rationalist who is skeptical of gods. This personal story will consider implications for all of us.

Sunday, September 13, 2015: “Rosh Hashanah”

Host: Don Morishita

Presenter: Rev. Elizabeth Greene

Rosh Hashanah: Time of Forgiveness & Atonement, Rev Elizabeth Greene

Each fall, religiously-practicing Jews observe High Holy Days, beginning with Rosh Hashanah and ending ten days later with Yom Kippur. During that time, the disciplines of self-examination, atonement and forgiveness are practiced.
What can all of us learn from this practice of commitment to self-honest, integrity and the right relationship?

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Unitarian Universalists covenant to affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; justice, equality and compassion in human relations; and acceptance of one another.

Sunday, September 6, 2015: “Water Communion”

Host/Presenter: Karen Fothergill

Like water flowing to the sea, we have returned from the mountains, rivers and quiet places where we spent some of our days this past year then once again returned to our beloved community.

As we come together for our first service of the “new” church year we will celebrate both new beginnings and reminisce together.

Members and guests are invited to bring water from their summer adventures, be they from travels far or near (even from your home water supply).

We will be sharing our stories with each other as we participate in our uniquely Unitarian Universalist ritual of water communion, so please be prepared to offer a sentence or two, not only where the water is from but perhaps more importantly, what meaning it holds for you.

Sunday, August 30, 2015: Why Are We Infatuated with Zombies?

This Sunday, our service will be drawn from a sermon by Rev. Thom Belote, minister of the Community Church of Chapel Hill, Unitarian Universalist, Chapel Hill, NC. We will explore troubling aspects of American life using America’s current interest in zombies.

Why are we as a people are so zombie crazy? Everywhere we look we see zombies. Zombies appear in movies, in books, in comic books, and on TV and of course they will be in our streets this Halloween asking for candy.

We will reflect on what this might mean in light of the direction our society is going. Why are zombies so popular? What do they represent to us? Are we being conditioned to respond in a desired way by unseen forces in our society?

Are we all turning into zombies?

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Sunday, August 23, 2015: “Cultivating Gratitude”

Host/Presenter: Kacee O’Conner

Based on research from The Greater Good Science Center we will explore gratitude. We will discover as we may already know gratitude does not always come naturally.

Negatives in our lives: disappointments, resentments, and fears sometimes occupy more of our attention than the positives.

Sunday, August 16, 2015: “Building Our Own Theology: Part 3”

Host/Presenter: Chad Minteer

Our Magic Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has been exploring aspects of what a free and responsible search for truth means in our individual lives as we reflect on our own experience of building our own theology. In keeping with our year’s theme of “Telling Our Stories” everyone is invited to come and share a favorite poem (or excerpt from one) that has special meaning.

After opening comments, we will hear from members of our congregation to learn of their favorite poems that have spiritual meaning to them.

As Unitarian Universalists, we have a proud tradition of responding to the imperatives of love and justice to work with those of us who are marginalized and oppressed in society and the world. Sunday, August 2, 2015: “Building Our Own Theology”

Presenter: Rev. Elizabeth Greene

The Unitarian Universalist Association has a curriculum called “Building Your Own Theology.” We notice that, in our faith tradition, we “build” our own belief systems, rather than accepting beliefs that others think we should have. This of course puts a great responsibility on the individual and the community to form responsible systems that honor Mystery, uphold justice, respect each other, value community and lead us to be better people on the journey.

This week, Rev. Elizabeth Greene will reflect on how we build our belief and value systems, what aids we have within ourselves and with a little help from our friends. Please join us this Sunday to learn more.
