May 17, 2020: “Great Compassion Without Tiring Illumines Me Always” (Online Service)

Presenter: Rev. Anne Spencer[Member Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple]

Over Buddhism’s 2500 year history its teachings and practices have traveled from India throughout Asia and now across the world. The Buddhist tradition has adapted and changed with each new culture and era it reaches. But even as Buddhism changes, adapts and modernizes, compassion remains central–even under the most challenging circumstances.

In her message, Rev. Anne Spencer will reflect on the role of compassion in Buddhism, sharing her experiences as a member of Idaho-Oregon Buddhist Temple (IOBT) in Ontario OR. The temple, which is part of the Jodo Shinshu school of Buddhism, was founded by Japanese immigrants and their families in the aftermath of their forced relocation to internment camps during WWII. Jodo Shinshu Buddhism teaches that the light of compassion illumines us always. Where have you found compassion in your life?

This service will be presented over the internet using the Zoom platform. If you are not familiar with Zoom, you may read some general instructions by clicking here.

May 10: “From Where Does Empathy Come?”

Presenter: Don Morishita

Earlier this year, our Idaho state legislature passed two anti-transgender laws, both of which are or will be challenged in court this year. For the past two months, our state has been on a stay at home order in response to the coronavirus pandemic. At the beginning of this crisis, Magic Valley Unitarian-Universalists teamed up with Idaho Home Health and Hospice to provide sack lunches to children and senior citizens who were unable to get lunches the first week the stay at home order was in place. Many volunteers answered to the call for donations and help.

These two events have something in common. Those who helped provide sack lunches expressed their empathy for those in need. Those who were against the two legislative bills expressed their empathy in support of the LGBTQ community.

Where does empathy come from? The first principle of Unitarian Universalism teaches us to respect the inherent worth and dignity of every person.

April 5: “To Be Idle and Blessed” (ONLINE 10:30 AM MST)

Presenter: Intern Minister Mary Beth Bolin

In Mary Oliver’s poem, “The Summer Day,” she says, “I don’t know exactly what a prayer is. / I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down / into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, / how to be idle and blessed … ”

This week we will wonder together “how to be idle and blessed,” exploring spiritual practice and the grace that comes from giving up, even momentarily, our identity as doers and producers of things, in order to simply experience being alive.

Our online service this Sunday, April 5th, at 10:30 AM Mountain Time, intern minister Mary Beth Bolin will lead worship for Magic Valley UU Fellowship on Zoom at the following link:

Presented By: BUUF Intern Minister Mary Beth Bolin

Due to the coronavirus our Fellowship will once again have an online service Sunday, March 22, 2020.

Intern Minister Mary Beth Bolin will facilitate an online worship for both Boise Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship and Magic Valley Unitarian-Unitarian Fellowship at 10:00 AM on Zoom.

The service, “Wisdom of our Elders”, will include reflections from a few of the elders at Boise Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship on how we experience aging and how we go about searching for understanding throughout our lives, eventually growing into wisdom.

This service will help all of us, whatever our age, dig into what it means to be living a life of near constant transition, bringing both new challenges and the invitation to greater wisdom.

Afterwards, there will be a virtual coffee hour in a second Zoom meeting.

March 22nd: (ONLINE SERVICE) “Lessons From Cars”

10:30 AM – ONLINE ONLY
Presenter: Rev Jenny Peek

Note: Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus the Magic Valley Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship will not have an in-person service this Sunday in Twin Falls. Instead the service will be presented using the online platform Zoom. If you have not used Zoom before please read our instructions for meeting online at this link.

Many of us may relate with Rev. Jenny’s sermon, “Lessons From Cars”, as she will share some of her favorite stories of the cars she has driven. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes tender and bittersweet, 40+ years of driving has provided ample opportunity for learning to be more consciously human.

In order to help you get ready, we are posting some instructions here to help you continue to engage with MVUUF and with each other during this virus outbreak.  To access ZOOM please email mvuuf83301@yahoo.com.  In the subject line write “Zoom Service.”

How does Zoom work?

Using Zoom is free and requires nothing more than a phone call, unless you would like to engage in the video portion of the meeting.

You can connect to our services using ZOOM by:

  • smart phone (using an internet wifi connection or a data plan)
  • a tablet,
  • a computer (Windows, Mac, Linux),

If you wish to listen using a simple telephone only, you will use the phone number provided to call in, then you will use the Meeting ID number to join the Zoom meeting.

TIPS:

  • For much of the service, you may be muted by the host so that you and everyone can hear what the main speaker says. This is normal.
  • There are times you may wish to join a “coffee hour” or other part of the meeting where you are able to speak to others.  If you have ambient (background) noise nearby, like fans, radio, equipment, or other equipment, it may be be picked up by your microphone and nobody will be allowed to hear you to address this please choose a quiet room to start your session.
  • If connecting by yourself in a noisy environment, use a headset with a built in mic.
  • It is recommended anyone wishing to participate get ready by installing zoom clients and apps on their devices ahead of time, to avoid missing parts of a meeting while you try to make everything work.

TO INSTALL the Zoom client ahead of time (recommended), please visit this link:
