What keeps us so busy in this modern world?

Religious traditions of all kinds encourage slowing down, noticing what is going on around us, simply being still. But a lot of us have a kind of non-stop life, whether it is work-related, volunteering all over the place, or keeping up with a home and kids.
How much “down time” does it take to be truly human, in touch with each other and larger truths?

April 7, 2019: “Beyond the ‘Why?”

What benefits are to be gained by being part of an organization that ties itself to the 2000th year of Christian tradition and our own Unitarian Universalist Association that was born out of 19th century liberal understandings? And most importantly, “Why not just abandon all religious groups and stay home or go golfing?”

Our speaker this Sunday is Kenneth Watts, an ordained minister in a liberal Christian tradition. Rev. Watts has been working as a hospital Chaplain for the past twenty-plus years. Originally from the mid-west (Illinois and Ohio), he moved to Boise in 2012 to be a Staff Chaplain at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. In Ohio he was a member of the North Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Lewis Center, Ohio (about 30 miles north of Columbus). Here in Idaho he is a member of the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

For others, Unitarian-Universalism is the first organized religion in which they have found a home. For all UUs, our spiritual journeys are an important part of who we are. February 17: Stages of Faith

Many people attending Unitarian-Universalist fellowships were raised in other religions, so much so that Unitarian-Universalism is often referred to as a sanctuary for religious refugees.  Let’s explore the natural stages of faith development into adulthood and discuss what potential benefits and drawbacks can come from gathering together with others who are in a variety of similar yet different phases of faith and transitional faith stages.

February 10: “The Triumph of Trust Over Experience”

What does it mean when we say we trust someone or something? What does it mean when we say we trust in God, or in the Universe? Does it mean we think things will always go our way? What happens in our hearts and souls when things do not go our way, especially in matters of deep import? Rev. Greene will reflect on these questions, and on how trust relates to faith and hope.

Our speaker this Sunday is Linda Fleming, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of the Magic Valley. Linda will be talking about the benefits Habitat for Humanity provides to Magic Valley residents. She also will give us a little history of the program and how we can not only benefit from Habitat but also what we as individuals can do to better help Habitat of the Magic Valley better serve the people of the Magic Valley.

January 20: “Daughterhood”

Kacee O’Conner, Debra Smith,  and Emmie Schlobohm

Three daughters, Kacee O’Connor, Emmie Schlobohm, and Debra Smith, members the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will share how they use their Unitarian Universalist principles to meet the challenge when they suddenly find themselves caregivers to their aging mothers. Some days they struggle living up to their Unitarian Universalist principles when it comes to taking care of their mothers’ emotional needs and some days they don’t do a good job of taking care of themselves.

Often, they are befuddled by the emotional whirlpool that living so close to someone who is nearing the end causes. How can they help each other? They are working with others to form communities that offer support, resources and sometimes just evenings of whining with wine. These three women will share how they use their Unitarian Universalist principles to help navigate this challenge.
