Fall is often a time when we have mixed feelings. It is good, as we feel the coolness, see the gorgeous trees, celebrate Halloween and All Souls—the turn of the seasons moves us and makes us feel good. At the same time, it is so clearly a time when the year is heading into its annual “death,” to the time when there is darkness and cold, and we can feel loss more sharply. How do we fully experience this important season—and the winter that will be upon us soon—without either pretending there is no sadness, or falling into too much sadness? What brings us hope that warmth and light will return?

Matthew Sabin, a speaker from the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will discuss a book he read in college titled “The Shockwave Rider.”

Our service this Sunday will allow people to anonymously talk with other people who only listen. There is nothing, nothing in the world that can take the place of one person intentionally listening or speaking to another. The act of consciously attending to another person — when one once discovers the art of listening and its significance this can become the center of gravity and the work of love.

In honor of Ganesh Chaturthi, a celebration of the Hindu god Ganesha, our guest, Elton Hall a member of the Boise Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, will explore how he got connected to Ganesha, the Lord of Success (the Hindu Elephant Diety), and what it may mean for a rationalist who is skeptical of gods. This personal story will consider implications for all of us.

Rosh Hashanah: Time of Forgiveness & Atonement, Rev Elizabeth Greene

Each fall, religiously-practicing Jews observe High Holy Days, beginning with Rosh Hashanah and ending ten days later with Yom Kippur. During that time, the disciplines of self-examination, atonement and forgiveness are practiced.

Like water flowing to the sea, we have returned from the mountains, rivers and quiet places where we spent some of our days this past year then once again returned to our beloved community.

As we come together for our first service of the “new” church year we will celebrate both new beginnings and reminisce together.

Members and guests are invited to bring water from their summer adventures, be they from travels far or near (even from your home water supply).

We will be sharing our stories with each other as we participate in our uniquely Unitarian Universalist ritual of water communion, so please be prepared to offer a sentence or two, not only where the water is from but perhaps more importantly, what meaning it holds for you.
