September 9th: Guests from the Episcopal Church of the Ascension

This Sunday, we will have guests from the Episcopal Church of the Ascension as our discussion leaders. The topic will be the history of Christianity, its creeds, sacraments and symbols. We encourage those attending to bring a question or two about Christianity to contribute to this discussion. Please note that no question will be considered absurd. An example of a question some might have is: “Does Christianity discriminate against God’s creations? Such as, if one is not a Christian (accepts Jesus Christ as his or her personal savior) are those of other faiths (Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists, Shintos, etc) doomed to Hell and damnation. What about those born before Christ? Are they doomed? What about animals? And perhaps even plants? In order to receive salvation and a happy after life (death) is the only requirement required that one accept Jesus Christ as his or her personal savior? After the speaker(s) completes her (their) talk, we will allow a few minutes for a brief question and answer period to address questions we may have pertaining to Christian thought. Please join us for a lively discussion on this topic.

* The answers provided by our discussion leader(s) reflect thoughts and opinions of the these members of Episcopal Church and do not necessarily reflect thoughts of all the various Christian denominations.

Jack Hartley will provide music with his guitar. All are invited to join us for lunch after the service.

The Magic Valley Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship meets every Sunday beginning at 10:30 AM at the Twin Falls Senior Center, 530 Shoshone Street West in Twin Falls. Newcomers are always welcome. September 1st: Annual Water Ceremony

This Sunday will be our annual Water Ceremony. This service is an excellent opportunity to welcome members, friends and newcomers into our new church year. Please bring a small container of water from places that you have been this summer (or even from your own home) and come prepared to share with us some stories about your travels, adventures either home or away from home.

The Water Communion, also called Water Ceremony, was first used at a Unitarian-Universalist worship service in the 1980s. Many UU congregations now hold a Water Communion once a year, often at the beginning of the new church year (September). Members and friends bring to the service a small amount of water from a place that is special to them (even from their homes). During the appointed time in the service, people one by one pour their water together into a large bowl. As the water is added, the person who brought it tells why this water is special. The combined water is a symbol of our shared faith coming from many different sources and paths.

August 4th: Humility and Power

This is an online service from Reverend Aaron White of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, Texas.  Reverend White reflects on what makes us powerful and able to change lives. Often it is the very thing that makes us uncomfortable. Rev. White’s academic concentration was comparative religious ethics, with a focus in Sanskrit and Indian studies.  Rev. White is grateful for this intense exposure to a variety of faiths, as it has added richness to his approach to religious practice and dialogue.

A discussion will follow on the topic of what world faiths say about mental illness as well as our own thoughts about this topic. Karen Fothergill will host this service. Susanna Terry will provide music. The Magic Valley Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship meets every Sunday beginning at 10:30 AM at the Twin Falls Senior Center, 530 Shoshone Street West in Twin Falls. Newcomers are always welcome. Childcare is available. We are handicapped accessible. For information, please contact Ken Whiting at 734-9161.

July 28th: Healing Grief through Mourning

Join us this Sunday for a discussion with Cynthia Hindes. When we are strong, stoic, and “in control” of our emotions — as we are commonly (though mistakenly) taught is wise, proper. and healthy. We seldom express the grief resulting from the all-too inevitable losses that occur in our lives. These include, but are not limited to, losses through death.  But the grief that is natural and inevitable when we suffer loss (of any kind) is not relieved when it is not released. And time alone does not heal us. It is only through mourning that we can heal the trauma of our losses, which will otherwise continue to accumulate over time since loss is common in life and not a one-time event.  Most of us are totally unaware of the danger of repressed grief and the resulting damage to us in all areas of our being.  There is proven evidence that it causes direct physical damage to our bodies in addition to mental, emotional, and spiritual/energetic debility. But we can reverse this if we choose — no matter how belatedly.

July 21st: The Soul’s Journey

The Soul’s Journey: Edgar Casey’s Concept of Reincarnation. This Sunday, we will explore Edgar Casey’s concept of reincarnation as well as our own belief or disbelief in reincarnation. According to Casey: All souls come to Earth to test their spiritual ideals to see if they are real. Only by becoming subject to the physical influences of the flesh and the laws of the Earth realm can a soul know for certain if it really possesses that spiritual ideal. Through this process, the soul is tested and the result is self-realization. This is the purpose of the Earth realm…

Please join us this Sunday when we view a video explaining Casey’s beliefs followed by a lively discussion. What makes a quality worship service? From a Unitarian Universalist perspective, what does it mean to worship? What are we worshiping and how should we do it so that almost everyone feels uplifted and enlightened. This Sunday we will be having a question and answer discussion session where we can all delve into these and other questions about worship.
