September 13: “Water Communion”

Presenter: Karen Fothergill

Have your water ready!

Join us this Sunday for our Annual Water Communion, a ritual that celebrates our gathering together for a new church year. This year will be different, as we continue to navigate the challenges of feeling our deep connection while maintaining our safe and responsible physical distances.

The Unitarian Universalist Water Communion is a traditional Unitarian Universalist celebration of life, equality, diversity and freedom. Our celebration will be a virtual one this year. Everyone will have the opportunity to pour water of memories into a vessel at home as you tell us the story of the water you gathered over the summer.

After the service, the water poured into your at-home container will be taken outside to water a tree, a favorite plant or perhaps even an interesting looking weed.

Presenter: Rev. Monica Dobbins

Life these days is overwhelming, with a global pandemic upending normal routines and American democracy threatened like never before. Only by developing our inner lives through spiritual practice will we have the depth of character to withstand the changing tides.

After the program stick around to join the “breakout rooms” for informal discussion and social gathering with other attendees.

August 16: “How to Dismantle an Empire and What Happens When We Become the Romans” (Online Service)

Presenter: Wyatt Schroeder (Member Boise Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship)
Wyatt S.

We live in a time of empire. Our Unitarian faith is based on the Judeo-Christian tradition, a narrative that is rooted deeply in the struggle against empire. Jesus was a protester, a counter-cultural force that spoke to the disinherited. His apostle, Paul, took up the charge and planted the seeds of a movement to rebel against an empire. And then that faith – then called Christianity – became the empire.

So too happened on our shores, a fledgling revolution created a country that would herald the American Empire. In our daily routine, how do we embrace the empire with its convenience, its charity, and our patient consent? Have we lost The Way? What’s our responsibility to overcome our own convenience for the sake of empowering others? For shirking off charity in the name of transformational change? How can we turn an age of empire into a time of rebellion?

Worship Associate: Digger Zout
Presenter: Rev. Monica Dobbins, First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City

Online Service (Beginning at 10:30 AM Mountain Time):

MonicaDobbinsOther countries have already beaten the Coronavirus and moved on with their national lives. That the United States continues to experience devastating losses says something about us as a nation. It’s especially surprising in a country dominated by a strain of a world religion with sacrifice at the core of its theology.

How do we live in such a time and place, and how do we cultivate the values we seem to be missing?

July 26: “Centering and Decentralizing: A Response to the Call for Change” (Online)

Presenter: Rev. Jenny Peek

Pastor-Jenny_c_cropAs people of faith, we are challenged to listen deeply and to follow folx [folx: A variation on the word folks, folx is meant to be a gender-neutral way to refer to members of or signal identity in the LGBTQ community] historically marginalized in a white, male and heterosexual gender binary dominated culture.

Recognizing how even as a progressive faith Unitarian Universalism has perpetuated dominant cultural practices—and committing to dismantling all that—is our 21st century challenge. Join us this Sunday as we welcome our visiting minister, Rev. Jenny Peek.

July 19,2020: “Confidence has no color” (Online)

10:30 AM Mountain Time (USA & Canada)

Presenter: Winnie Christensen
President of Culture for Change Foundation

Worship Associate: Don Morishita

Winnie“Growing up we are told and we see what beauty is supposed to look like in Africa”, says Winnie Christensen, President of Culture for Change Foundation. That is an image Winnie can relate to. When she came to the United States, the standard of beauty was different from what she had grown up with. “It is so important to remember that all women are great creations, and all are beautiful with different personalities”, Winnie adds.

So many refugee and immigrant women and youth come to America and are told what they should look like, what they should wear, and how they should style their hair. They are asked to give up the essence of who they are, and to merge into a society that doesn’t always accept them. The youth in the refugee community also face an identity crisis and strive to place themselves in spaces that enable them to train for success.

It is Winnie’s mission to help these women and youth in the refugee community to appreciate themselves, integrate with the community at large, not to undermine their ideas and process, and still see their true beauty. It is critical to understand that beauty is not only from within, but to also change the dichotomy of beauty standards.
Christensen feels that in order to polish up who they are, they have to have confidence in themselves — because confidence has no color!
